WestJet Adds Toronto Flights to Puerto Plata and Punta Cana for Summer
Canadian carrier WestJet is expanding its Caribbean footprint this summer, with new seasonal service connecting Toronto to two of the Dominican Republic's most popular beach destinations: Puerto Plata and Punta Cana.
According to Dominican Today, the airline has folded both DR gateways into its 2026 summer schedule, which also covers routes across the Caribbean, Central America, and Mexico. All Dominican-bound departures will originate from Toronto Pearson International Airport.
What travelers can expect
Puerto Plata, on the country's north coast, will receive a weekly flight every Tuesday between May 15 and October 20, 2026. This is welcome news for visitors heading to Playa Dorada, Cabarete, Sosúa, or the cable-car views of Mount Isabel de Torres, all of which are within easy reach of Gregorio Luperón International Airport (POP).
Punta Cana, meanwhile, will see significantly more traffic. The first phase of service runs from April 29 through September 2, with two flights per week, giving Canadian travelers more flexibility to plan beach breaks in Bávaro, Cap Cana, or Uvero Alto during the shoulder and peak summer months.
Why this matters for travelers
Direct routes from Toronto make the Dominican Republic one of the easiest sun destinations for Canadians to reach without connections, and the added frequencies could translate into more competitive fares, particularly for last-minute bookings and family travel during school holidays.
For those planning ahead, a few practical tips:
- Book early for July and August, when demand from Canadian families typically peaks.
- Consider Puerto Plata if you want a quieter, more locally flavored coastline versus Punta Cana's large all-inclusive scene.
- Check baggage and seat-selection fees carefully, as WestJet's fare bundles vary in what they include.
- Confirm your passport validity, since the DR requires it to be valid for the duration of your stay.
Expats and second-home owners in the DR may also find the expanded schedule useful for summer visits from family in Ontario. As always, travelers should confirm exact dates and frequencies directly with WestJet before booking, since seasonal schedules can shift.
