RIU Goes Adults-Only in Mexico: What It Means for DR Travelers

October 20, 2026Caribbean Journal

RIU Hotels has relaunched its flagship Playa del Carmen property as an adults-only, all-inclusive retreat, signaling a broader trend in Caribbean-basin hospitality that Dominican Republic travelers should watch closely.

According to Caribbean Journal, the newly reopened Riu Palace Mexico in Playacar underwent a top-to-bottom renovation that reshaped the resort into a grown-ups-only escape. The beachfront property, which originally opened its doors in 1999, now features 434 refreshed guest rooms, five swimming pools, and a premium Elite Club tier set directly on the sand. Some accommodations also come with private plunge pools — a feature that has become a benchmark for luxury all-inclusives across the region.

Why DR Travelers Should Care

While the hotel sits in Mexico, the overhaul reflects a strategy RIU has been rolling out across its Caribbean portfolio, including its substantial presence in the Dominican Republic. The chain operates several large resorts in Punta Cana, including Riu Palace Punta Cana, Riu Palace Macao, and Riu Republica — the latter already positioned as an adults-only property. Travelers who have enjoyed the Mexico flagship in the past may find the new adults-only format pushes them to consider Punta Cana for family trips, where RIU still maintains kid-friendly options.

The move also underscores how major all-inclusive brands continue to split their inventory between family resorts and adults-only concepts, giving DR visitors clearer choices when booking. If you're comparing Punta Cana to Playa del Carmen for a couples getaway, the Dominican Republic still offers strong value, direct flights from most North American hubs into Punta Cana International Airport (PUJ), and comparable Elite Club–style upgrades at several RIU Palace properties.

Planning Tips

  • Couples travelers: Riu Republica and the adults-only sections of Riu Palace Macao remain the DR counterparts to the new Mexico concept.
  • Families: RIU's family-friendly Punta Cana resorts have not shifted to adults-only, so your usual bookings remain intact.
  • Loyalty members: Benefits earned through RIU Class carry across properties, including between Mexico and the Dominican Republic.

Expect similar renovation cycles to reach RIU's older DR properties in the coming years, as the brand continues modernizing its Caribbean footprint.
