A Major Win for Dominican Aviation

Travelers flying into the Dominican Republic's most popular gateway have new reason to feel good about their arrival experience. Punta Cana International Airport (PUJ) has been named the top airport in the Central America and Caribbean region at the Skytrax World Airport Awards 2026, according to Dominican Today.

The honor was presented on March 18 during a ceremony in London held alongside the Passenger Terminal Expo World — an annual gathering where global rankings based on traveler feedback are unveiled. Skytrax is widely regarded as one of the aviation industry's most influential rating bodies, with its awards determined by passenger surveys conducted across the globe.

This marks the first time that PUJ has taken home this particular regional title, a milestone for an airport that already handles the bulk of international tourist arrivals into the country.

What This Means for Visitors

For anyone planning a trip to the eastern coast of the Dominican Republic in 2026, the recognition reinforces what many frequent visitors have noted for years: Punta Cana's open-air terminals, palm-shaded walkways and relatively quick immigration flow set it apart from larger, more conventional hubs. The award is based on factors travelers actually care about — check-in efficiency, cleanliness, signage, shopping, dining, security processing and overall comfort.

Practical tips for travelers passing through PUJ:

  • Arrive early during peak season. Even an award-winning airport sees long lines during the December–April high season and around Semana Santa.
  • Have your E-Ticket ready. The Dominican Republic's digital migration form is still required for entry and exit, so complete it before heading to the airport.
  • Budget time for the walk. PUJ's terminals are spread out, and some gates involve a short outdoor stroll — pleasant, but worth factoring in.
  • Use official taxis or pre-booked transfers. Authorized transport counters are located just outside the arrivals area.

The recognition is also a boost for the broader Dominican tourism sector, which continues to lead the Caribbean in visitor volume. With PUJ now formally ranked at the top of its region, travelers heading to Bávaro, Cap Cana, Uvero Alto or Bayahíbe can expect their first impression of the country to live up to the destination itself.
